Tajweed Mastery
This course teaches the rules that govern correct Quranic recitation — articulation points, the noon and meem sakinah rules, madd, qalqalah and ghunnah — and applies them verse by verse with a teacher correcting in real time. Six to nine months at two or three classes a week covers the rules thoroughly.
Tajweed is usually presented as a long list of Arabic terms, which is why many students bounce off it. Taught properly it is the opposite: a small number of rules, learned in order, each one immediately applied to verses the student is already reading.
The rules cannot be learned from video alone, because a student cannot hear their own errors. The value is entirely in someone listening and correcting the same mistake until it stops.

What you need before starting
- Fluent reading from the Mushaf. Students still hesitating over letters should complete Quran reading first — rules layered on shaky reading simply preserve the errors.
What the course covers
Stages run in order, each one assuming the last is secure. Timings assume two to three classes a week and are adjusted to the individual student.

Makharij — the articulation points
4–8 weeks
Where each letter is produced: throat, tongue, lips, nasal cavity. Most beginner errors live here rather than in the named rules, so this comes first regardless of how impatient the student is to reach the rules.

Sifat — the qualities of letters
3–4 weeks
Heaviness and lightness, whispering, strength and softness — the properties that distinguish letters sharing a point of articulation.

Noon sakinah and tanween
6–8 weeks
Izhar, idgham (with and without ghunnah), iqlab and ikhfa — the family of rules that governs the largest share of the text.

Meem sakinah, ghunnah and qalqalah
3–4 weeks
The meem rules, the nasal sound held on doubled noon and meem, and the echo on ق ط ب ج د when they carry sukoon.

Madd — the rules of extension
4–6 weeks
Natural madd made consistent first, then the longer types with their counts. Madd errors are the most audible mistake to any listener because they change the rhythm of the verse.

Rules of waqf and ibtida, then sustained application across a range of surahs until the rules hold without conscious effort.
What a class looks like
- A short theory segment introduces or revises one rule.
- The student then finds every instance of that rule in a chosen surah and reads it aloud, marked and corrected live.
- Recurring errors are tracked across weeks rather than re-explained from scratch each time.
How progress is measured
- The measure is applied, not theoretical: a student who can define ikhfa but cannot spot it while reading has not learned it.
- Periodic recorded or live assessment on an unseen passage, checking whether the rules survive at normal reading speed.
Tajweed Mastery — common questions
- Is Tajweed obligatory?
- The scholars distinguish between the rules that prevent changing a letter’s sound or a word’s meaning — which are required in recitation — and the finer points of beautification, which are a perfection beyond that. In practice every student should learn correct articulation; the refinements follow.
- In what order should the rules be learned?
- Articulation points first, then the qualities of letters, then noon sakinah and tanween, then madd, then qalqalah and ghunnah. Everything after that builds on those foundations.
- Can I learn Tajweed from videos instead?
- You can learn what the rules are. You cannot learn to apply them, because you cannot hear your own mistakes — that needs a teacher listening. Videos work well as revision alongside live classes, not as a replacement.
