Noorani Qaida
Noorani Qaida is the standard beginner primer for reading the Quran. It teaches the Arabic letters, how they join, and the vowel and extension rules — in a fixed order, with heavy drilling of pronunciation. Most children complete it in three to six months at two or three classes a week; adults often finish faster.
Everything else in Quran study rests on this course. Before a student can read the Mushaf, they need to recognise each Arabic letter instantly, produce its sound from the right place in the mouth, and read the marks that sit above and below it.
The Qaida exists because teaching that in a sensible order is a solved problem. We follow it page by page, one student to one teacher, with the teacher listening to every letter rather than to a room of twenty children.

Who this course is for
- Children from about four or five who are starting Quran for the first time

What you need before starting
- None. This is the true starting point — no Arabic, and no prior study, is assumed.
What the course covers
Stages run in order, each one assuming the last is secure. Timings assume two to three classes a week and are adjusted to the individual student.

The letters in isolation
4–8 weeks
All 28 letters by shape and by sound, with particular attention to the pairs English speakers collapse — س and ص, ت and ط, ه and ح, ك and ق — and to the letters with no English equivalent at all.

Joined forms
3–4 weeks
How each letter changes shape at the start, middle and end of a word, and which letters never join to the one that follows. Students begin reading two and three-letter combinations.

Harakat and tanween
3–5 weeks
Fathah, kasrah and dammah, then the doubled vowels. This is the point where a student starts genuinely reading rather than identifying.

Sukoon, shaddah and madd
4–6 weeks
Silent letters and consonant clusters, doubled letters, and the letters of extension with their correct counts. Natural madd is drilled until it is consistent before longer types are introduced.

Stopping rules and Mushaf practice
3–4 weeks
Where to stop and how words change when you do, then supervised reading of short surahs from the Mushaf itself rather than from the Qaida pages.
What a class looks like
- The teacher shares the Qaida page on screen and the student reads aloud, line by line.
- Correction happens on the spot, letter by letter — usually with the teacher demonstrating the mouth position and the student repeating until it settles.
- Each class ends with a specific drill to repeat at home, normally five minutes a day rather than a long session.
How progress is measured
- The test for moving on is not reaching the last page. It is reading an unfamiliar line — one that has never been drilled — without hesitating over letter shapes, with the heavy letters still heavy.
- Teachers open the Mushaf at random and ask for three lines. A student who can only read the pages they have practised is not finished, however far through the book they are.
Noorani Qaida — common questions
- How long does Noorani Qaida take to complete?
- Three to six months is typical for a child of six or seven taking three classes a week. Adults usually move through recognition faster and pronunciation slower, finishing in two to four months at the same frequency. Pace is not a measure of ability — accuracy matters far more than speed here.
- Can an adult start with Noorani Qaida?
- Yes, and a large share of our Qaida students are adults, including reverts. Because classes are one-to-one, nobody is learning the alphabet in front of a group.
- My child already knows some surahs by heart. Do they still need this?
- Almost certainly. Reciting from memory and reading from the page are different skills, and children who have learned surahs by ear often cannot identify a single letter in writing. The Qaida builds the reading skill that memorisation alone does not.
