Removing VAT is the operation people get wrong, and it is worth stating plainly: you do not subtract the VAT percentage from the gross price. At a 20 percent rate, the VAT contained in a 120 gross price is 20, not 24 — because the tax was calculated on the 100 net figure, not on the total. The correct operation is dividing by 1.20, and doing it the intuitive way overstates the tax on every line.

Rates vary by country and by product category. The UK standard rate is 20 percent with reduced rates of 5 percent and zero on specific categories; Ireland is 23; Germany 19; Pakistan's general sales tax sits at 18 for most goods. Many jurisdictions also apply reduced rates to food, books, children's clothing, or energy, so the applicable rate depends on what is being sold as well as where.

The practical uses are invoicing and reconciliation: working out what to charge a client when you have quoted a net fee, extracting the recoverable tax from a supplier receipt for a return, and checking that a gross figure on a purchase order breaks down the way the supplier claims.
