The adjustments worth learning the difference between are brightness and contrast, because they are often used interchangeably and do different things. Brightness shifts every pixel up or down uniformly, which lightens a dark photo but also flattens it, since the darkest and lightest parts move together. Contrast stretches the distance between them, which is usually what an image that looks "flat" actually needs. Reaching for brightness when the problem is contrast produces a washed-out result, and it is the most common adjustment mistake.

Saturation is the one to be conservative with. A modest increase makes a photo look richer; a large one pushes skin tones orange and turns skies into flat blocks of blue, and the threshold where it tips is lower than it feels while you are dragging the slider. Stepping away and looking again before exporting catches this reliably.

The effects — grayscale, sepia, blur — are stylistic rather than corrective. Grayscale is genuinely useful beyond aesthetics: converting to black and white is the quickest way to check whether an image has enough tonal contrast to work, independent of colour.
