The reason flashcards work better than re-reading is that they force retrieval. Reading a page again feels productive because it feels familiar, but familiarity is not recall — the well-documented finding is that trying to retrieve an answer, even unsuccessfully, produces far stronger retention than reviewing the material passively. The effort of failing to remember is doing the work.

The second principle is spacing. Reviewing material at increasing intervals — a day later, then three, then a week — retains far more than the same total time spent in one session. Cramming produces a score the next morning and very little a month later, which matters for anything cumulative.

What makes an individual card effective is being narrow. A card asking "explain the causes of the First World War" cannot be answered correctly or incorrectly in any useful sense. Several cards, each on one specific cause, can be. If you find yourself partially remembering a card repeatedly, that is the signal it contains more than one fact and should be split.

Writing the cards is itself worth something — the process of deciding what the question is forces you to identify what actually matters in the material, which is why pre-made decks are consistently less effective than ones you made.
